International Men’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate men’s contributions to society, family, and communities while also highlighting some of the unique challenges they face. Established to promote positive role models, encourage gender equality, and support men’s wellbeing, International Men’s Day is a time to reflect on how society can better recognise and support men across all aspects of life.

The day is built around six pillars: promoting positive male role models, celebrating men’s contributions, focusing on men’s health and well-being, improving gender relations, showcasing tolerance, and creating a safer, better world.

A vital part of International Men's Day is recognising and celebrating the role that men play as allies in advancing gender equality. By actively supporting women in the workplace and community, men contribute to a more inclusive society where all individuals, regardless of gender, can reach their potential. From advocating for equal pay to challenging stereotypes and biases, male allies can make a powerful impact.

While we acknowledge allyship is a key role that men play, it’s equally important to spotlight areas where men may need more understanding, recognition, and support, particularly with their mental health.

Statistics reveal that men are disproportionately affected by suicide. In the UK, men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, with suicide rates highest among men aged 45-49. This troubling statistic highlights the need for society to address the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and encourage open conversations.

Research shows that societal expectations often pressure men to appear strong and stoic, leading many to suppress emotions and avoid seeking help. This can contribute to feelings of isolation, stress, and anxiety. By breaking down these stereotypes, we create a culture where men feel supported in addressing their mental health needs.

What Can Be Done to Support Men’s Mental Health?

Supporting men’s mental health begins with fostering an environment where men feel comfortable discussing their struggles. Simple steps include providing access to mental health resources, ensuring open lines of communication, and creating support networks within workplaces. Many companies now offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), which provide access to confidential counselling and mental health support.

Normalising mental health days, promoting work-life balance, and ensuring that all employees have access to resources and support can make a significant difference in reducing stigma and encouraging early intervention.

International Men’s Day provides companies with an opportunity to engage in conversations about men’s health and wellbeing.

Organisations can use this day to highlight the mental health resources available, invite experts to speak on topics like stress management and work-life balance, and celebrate male employees’ contributions. This is also a chance to explore the importance of allyship, ensuring that everyone—men included—feels empowered to support gender equality within the workplace.
